Nikon Introduces Z30 Mirrorless Camera and 400mm Z Mount Lens

Nikon has announced a new APS-C-sized mirrorless camera, known as the Z30. The DX-format Z30 is the smallest and lightest camera Nikon has ever made, and the company says it is designed for video content creators, vloggers, and for live streaming.

The Z30 has a 20.9MP DX-Format CMOS Sensor and is capable of capturing 4K video at up to 30 frames per second, 1080p at up to 120 fps or live streaming in 60p. The DX format is Nikon’s flavor of APS-C image sensors, with a smaller dimension of 24x16mm. The sensor is designed to support DX Nikkor lenses, instead of the full frame-sized FX line.

The camera is also capable of continuously recording up to two hours and 15 minutes, making it ideal for live streaming and long-form interviews.

The camera has direct power capability from a USB-C port, providing the option of plugging in a power brick to extend recording time.

Moreover, the Z30 can double as a high-resolution webcam, with support for a variety of web conferencing apps like Zoom. The camera is also capable of capturing at an ISO range of ISO 100-51200, or up to ISO 25600 when recording video.

There’s also a built-in tally light, making it easy for talent to know that they are being recorded, and selfie-style controls permit changing the focus position and exposure, and self-timer.

The Z30 also supports digital e-VR image stabilization, which can stabilize the video image while moving with the camera.

For still image capture, the Z30 is capable of 20.9MP stills, with continuous shooting of up to 11 frames per second. The stills can also be merged with video during in-camera time lapses, and the Z30 has built-in presets and filters to enhance content even further straight from the camera itself.

The Z30 incorporates a hybrid autofocus system that leverages both phase-detection and contrast detection methods, as well as eye detection AF to lock focus on a subject’s eyes.

The face and eye tracking feature can recognize people, dogs, and cats and track their movements throughout a scene. The camera can also shift focus while recording product closeups as they are moved away from the camera.

With a pull-out Vari-Angle LCD touch screen, Nikon says the Z30 is ideal for vlogging, and for framing a subject from extreme angles like high above the head, or lower near the ground.

The camera also has a top-mounted stereo microphone, plus a 3.5mm external microphone port for working with a shotgun, wireless, or lavalier mic.

Other features include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth compatibility through Nikon’s Snapbridge app, for enabling remote camera control, and wireless photo and video transfer.

The pre-order retail price of the Z30 is $706.95, and it comes with the camera, EN-EL25 rechargeable lithium-ion battery, USB-C cable, stream, and body cap.

There’s also a one-lens kit that comes with the Nikkor Z DX 16-50 f3.5-6.3 lens for $849.95 and a two-lens kit with the 16-50 and the Nikkor Z DX 50-250mm f4.5-6.3 for $1199.95. The camera will ship in mid-July.

Nikon also announced their Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S telephoto lens, which the company says is the lightest lens in its class.

Weighing at just over two and a half pounds, the Z400 is ideal for capturing sports, wildlife, and birds.

Built with one ED glass element, two Super ED glass elements, and one SR lens element, the Z400 is designed to reduce chromatic aberration. The elements are also coated with Nikon’s Nano Crystal Coat to reduce ghost and flare effects.

The lens has an optical vibration reduction function which provides image stabilization of up to 5.5 stops. The lens can also reduce focus-breathing when being used in video shoots, by effectively reducing shifting of the angle of view when focusing.

The lens has a retail price of $3249.95 and it will ship in July of 2022.
