Tiffen has announced a new neutral density kit for the DJI Mini 3 Pro drone. The three filter set comes with ND8, ND16, and ND32 neutral density filters, that promise to reduce the light coming into the drone’s camera by 3-5 stops depending on which filter is chosen.
The DJI Mini 3 Pro is DJI’s last unmanned aerial vehicle that captures video from a 4K, gimbal-stabilized camera. It has a 48MP 1/1.3” CMOS image sensor and a 24mm equivalent f/1.7 lens. It is capable of capturing a 4K 8-bit 4:2:0 video with a 150 Mb/s max bitrate. And with an overall weight of just 249g.
“Tiffen’s 3-Filter Neutral Density Kit for the DJI Mini 3 Pro offers a simple professional method of controlling the lighting conditions while operating this popular drone,” says the announcement. “Using Tiffen’s lightweight filters helps manage the camera aperture for ideal exposure without color shift.
The Tiffen Drone Filters are made of 4K high definition optical glass that is scratch-proof and waterproof, with multiple coatings that also reduce reflections without sacrificing clarity or color accuracy. The glass is encased in rectangular filter rings made of aircraft-grade aluminum, making them robust and light for flight.
What Tiffen doesn’t mention though, is how heavy the filters are, though not likely heavy enough to put the drone over the .55lb legal limit before having to register with the FAA.
The FAA requires registration at .55 pounds, and the DJI Mini 3 Pro, is just under that. If it does, however, drone pilots may want to consider if that’s something that they want to deal with.
It’s a good idea though, as drones have a habit of flying away and the registration number will make the drone owner easier to identify.
The Tiffen Drone Filters Mini 3 Pro filter kit includes a protective case and cleaning cloth, and sells for a retail price of $69.99. Preorders are being taken, with the shipping date to be determined. For information visit Tiffen’s Website.
